Trust Women! Keep Choice!

January 22, 2013, marked the 40th Anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade Court decision to legalize abortion rights in the United States. Roe v. Wade overturned numerous anti-choice state laws that denied women autonomy over their bodies, ensuring them their right to free choice.

Choice is an important freedom which we all use every day.  From minor everyday choices such as going to work v. staying home, where to shop for groceries or which bill to pay.  Then there are choices that are more complex and require more reflection…what career to choose, religious preference, who to marry, whether and when to have children. Most reading this would never think they have a right to make these choices for someone else.

Nevertheless, choice often gets lost in the conversation about abortion.  I am pro-choice, but not pro-abortion. I can only make the choice to have an abortion for me…not for my sisters, not for my neighbors, not for women in other parts of the country. Choice is vital to the preservation of women’s rights, personal freedom, and privacy.

Honoring women means honoring their choices, including the choice to have or not have an abortion.  Trust Women!  Keep Choice!
